A new Thanksgiving tradition

A new Thanksgiving tradition

Hi everyone,

So Cook for Love has had its first birthday and I am deplorably late wishing everybody a happy birthday, however, I think Thanksgiving is the perfect time to say “hi” and catch up a little.

As I write there is a pot of vegetable soup simmering on my stove and I am testing the apple pie recipe for Brenda. Liam and Catriona are hovering in the background waiting to fulfill their jobs as taste testers (a chore they love) but will be curiously absent when I need dishwashers.

Last week was a very different story though.

Liam was sick and his levels were very high.  We needed to get as many calories with as little phe as possible into him, so, what would we do? The answer was simple: go to Cook for Love.  Using the old tried and true recipes combined with some of the new ones that will be coming to the site, we were able to entice Liam to eat again.  We gradually saw the spark come back into him and when he did a happy dance after I made the Upside down Apple Pancake, I knew he was better.  Once again Cook for Love had proven how valuable it was to my family.  Having the Cook for Love recipes at the touch of the fingertips has been so convenient during this past year whether Liam has had a case of the munchies, we’ve had a family celebration or he’s battling the latest bug he’s picked up.  (Children are germy little things, aren’t they?)

So this year when I sit down to share my Thanksgiving meal with family and friends I will be giving thanks for the health and happiness of everyone in my home.  Liam and our entire group will enjoy the same meal except for the turkey.  Each one of us will enjoy our meal not only because it is delicious but also because Liam is a full participant.  When he asks someone to pass the stuffing, they will.  When he offers them a taste of his apple pie they’ll want to try it.  He’ll hog the potatoes; Steve will say he doesn’t like brussel sprouts then he’ll try them and say he ONLY likes them when they’re cooked this way. Liam will whisper gobble gobble when we serve the turkey and Catriona will remember it was once “one of God’s precious living creatures,” then she’ll refuse to eat it.   (Thanksgiving traditions come in all forms.)

There’ll be 10 of us for Thanksgiving dinner and according to the American Farm Bureau Federation the national average cost of Thanksgiving dinner for a group of 10 is $44.61.  As the advertisement says; Thanksgiving dinner $44.61; sharing it with everyone:  priceless.

So this year I’m going to start a new Thanksgiving tradition; I’m going to donate $50 to Cook for Love.  Enough to feed a family of 10 but not enough to truly show my appreciation.  Won’t you consider donating also?  Every little bit helps further Cook for Love’s mission.

Once again, thank you all for allowing me to share this PKU journey with you.  Happy Holidays and Bon Apetit!
